Corrosion inhibitors play a central role in modern industrial cleaners and degreasers. While the primary function of an alkaline cleaner is to remove oils, greases, and particulate soils from metal surfaces, the formulation must simultaneously protect the substrate. During cleaning, metal surfaces are temporarily exposed to water, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, and salts.
Without proper inhibition, this environment can initiate corrosion on metals within minutes.
Important properties of corrosion inhibitors
Corrosion inhibitors are integrated to create a protective chemical environment that stabilizes pH, forms passivating layers on metals, and reduces electrochemical reactions at the surface. In alkaline degreasers for metal components, the balance between cleaning power and material protection is critical.
Highly alkaline systems may enhance soil removal but can also increase the risk of corrosion, particularly in immersion or spray applications. Effective corrosion inhibition requires both buffering capacity - ensuring the pH remains stable throughout use and the formation of a protective interface on metals.
This is especially important in industrial maintenance, metal fabrication, automotive parts cleaning, and metalworking environments, where process reliability and surface integrity are non-negotiable.
Modern Alternative for Industrial Cleaner Formulations
Compared with traditional amine-based systems, ESTISURF CI 200 offers improved labeling profile, low vapor pressure, and mild odor characteristics, contributing to a safer and user-friendly formulation concept.
For formulators of industrial degreasers and maintenance cleaners, ESTISURF CI 200 represents a modern alternative to borate-amine systems and conventional alkanolamines. It combines strong buffering capacity, reliable corrosion inhibition, complete water solubility, and non-foaming behavior in a single additive.
This multifunctionality simplifies formulation design while improving operational robustness, helping manufacturers deliver cleaners that protect metal surfaces as effectively as they remove contaminants.
ESTISURF CI 200 - A new corrosion inhibitor
ESTISURF CI 200 is a multifunctional, none-foaming, water-soluble corrosion inhibitor designed specifically for water-miscible metalworking fluids, cooling fluids, and industrial cleaners.
Due to its high alkaline reserve, ESTISURF CI 200 stabilizes the pH of the system and contributes to long-term buffering capacity.
With a typical pH of 9.5 in 1% aqueous solution, it delivers effective alkalinity without the extreme aggressiveness associated with conventional primary amines. In industrial cleaner formulations, ESTISURF CI 200 is typically used in concentrate at 1–20%, depending on formulation design and final dilution rate. At 5% concentration in demineralized water, it achieves corrosion grade 0 in the iron chip test according to DIN 51 360, demonstrating excellent protection of ferrous substrates.
ESTISURF CI 200 shows interesting product properties compared with conventional mono-ethanol amine (MEA):
